Yay for Friday the 13th 🙂
It’s coming up in a couple days so start making your plans ASAP, and enjoy it to the fullest as it’s the only one we’ll have this year…*sad face* We have to wait till 2026 to have three of them in one year (although in 2023 and 2024 we’ll have two each!).
Friday the 13th always gets a bum rap, and I’m hoping to change that, at least in my little corner of the world.
I read somewhere that the hatred/fear of Friday the 13th started in the late 1800s, but Fridays and the number 13 have been getting dissed for much longer than that, so there’s a lot of rumor and negative press to cut through.
I’m sure most of you are familiar with the supposed “evils” of Friday the 13th, and I’d rather talk about why the number 13 and Fridays are actually really awesome, so here goes.
If you work a day-job Monday through Friday, you already know Friday is really amazing because it’s the start of the weekend and the day everyone in the traditional work week looks forward to…especially since it’s often payday!
But, Friday is loved for other reasons as well. Did you known that it’s the sacred day of many goddesses, including Venus, Roman goddess of love, as well as Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love? It’s also sacred to Freyja and Frigga, two amazing Norse goddesses that are considered to be different goddesses or the same one (depending on who you’re asking).
Friday is a day to celebrate the Divine Feminine but also to celebrate Creativity, Sensuality, and Beauty. Friday is a day of female energy, of harmony, and of love and passion.
As for the number 13, well it’s the number of creation, of death & rebirth, of blood, and of fertility. For lovers of math and of aesthetics, thirteen is also part of the Fibonacci sequence and is associated with the Golden Ratio.
And it’s pretty frickin’ magical and wondrous, especially for women, as it’s the number of the Divine Feminine. There are thirteen lunar months in a year and (on average) women have thirteen menstrual cycles per year. The number 13 resonates with the energies of independence, motivation, and passion. If you’re into Numerology, you will note that the number 13 holds the characteristics of the numbers 1, 3, and 4 (i.e., some really great stuff).
Whereas twelve is considered by most to be the number of completeness, thirteen is considered to be the number of transformation and change (Numerologists might beg to differ). While some people find transformation and change tough or scary, some thrive with change, and many of us do our best to embrace it. Change is important and awesome for growth and happiness. Additionally, the Ancient Egyptians believed there were 13 stages to life, the last and most important of which was the 13th where you transitioned to eternal life.
In any event, a Friday the 13th is very powerful and a wonderful day to do ritual or magick…or to simply celebrate the wonder that is the Feminine.
Whether transformation magick, self-love ritual, facing your fears, cleansing yourself of anything no longer needed or wanted…or any of the other things you can do on this day, I wish you lots of love and happiness and a wonderful Friday the 13th~!
PS: if you see one of these guys, give him some serious love!
